Bonsai Dormeuse | Designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune | Arflex

The Bonsai Dormeuse, designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune for Arflex in 2016, is a sculptural upholstered seat inspired by Japanese aesthetics and culture. Its soft, flowing silhouette is characterized by rounded curves that recall organic, cloud-like forms, giving the design a distinctive visual identity. The concept originates from the designers' reflection on Japanese gardens, where bushes and shrubs are carefully cultivated and trimmed into soft, organic shapes. Claesson Koivisto Rune translated this visual language into the rounded upholstered volumes of the Bonsai Dormeuse seating collection. In the metal-base version, these generous upholstered forms are elevated on discreet metal feet. The contrast between the substantial curved seat and understated support helps emphasize the sculptural character of the design. The official Arflex listing identifies this configuration as the Sofa 172 with metal feet. The graceful silhouette makes the Bonsai Dormeuse suitable for both residential and hospitality environments, an application specifically identified by Arflex. With its Japanese-inspired concept, soft geometry and unmistakable profile, Bonsai offers a compelling alternative to conventional linear lounge seating, bringing together the multidisciplinary Scandinavian approach of Claesson Koivisto Rune and the Italian furniture expertise of Arflex.
