Designed in 1958 by the legendary Danish architect and designer Arne Jacobsen, the Swan Dining Chair (originally Model 3320) is a triumph of mid-century organic functionalism. Jacobsen custom-designed this masterpiece alongside the famous Egg Chair for the lobby and lounge areas of the cutting-edge SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. By shrinking the proportions and adjusting the seat height, this iconic silhouette transitions beautifully from a relaxed lounge piece into an incredibly sophisticated, statement-making dining or desk chair. The Swan Dining Chair represents a radical technical breakthrough in furniture history. Frustrated by the limitations of traditional wood framing, Jacobsen became one of the very first designers to utilize a molded polyurethane foam shell reinforced with fiberglass. Because the synthetic foam could be cast into virtually any form, Jacobsen completely eliminated straight lines from the design. The result is a fluid, sculptural piece where the backrest, armrests, and seat merge into a single continuous curve that beautifully mimics the elegant posture of a folding swan.
