The Marea Coffee Table, designed by the duo Bernhardt & Vella for Arflex, is the original heart of the Marea collection. It is a design that plays with the concepts of overlapping shapes and the "tide-like" movement of light and shadow. The Marea collection was born from an obsession with essential geometry. Bernhardt & Vella sought to create a piece that felt both ancient (using stone) and futuristic (using precision-cut glass and metal). The name Marea (Tide) refers to the rhythmic, circular shapes that overlap like waves. The Marea Coffee Table tables are often used in "clusters." Because they come in various heights and sizes, they are designed to overlap, creating a dynamic landscape of surfaces in a living room. While the materials are quintessentially Italian luxury, the silhouette is stripped of all unnecessary decoration, following the Japanese principle of Ma (the beauty of empty space). The beauty of the Marea Coffee Table lies in the pairing of Marquina or Carrara marble with tinted glass. The transparency of the glass allows the veins of the marble beneath it to remain visible when they overlap. The base is composed of slim, architectural legs in black or painted metal, providing a "stilt-like" support that makes the heavy stone tops appear to float. It is not just a single table but a system. The ability to mix and match materials (stone vs. glass) and heights allows for a bespoke coffee table arrangement.
