The Pipistrello Medio Table Lamp is the "Goldilocks" of the lighting world—perfectly sized between the grand original and the tiny portable version. Designed by the visionary Gae Aulenti in 1965, its name is Italian for "Bat," inspired by the ribbed, wing-like shape of its iconic diffuser. It is one of the few lamps in history that manages to look both gothic and futuristic, organic and industrial, all at the same time. While the original Pipistrello is a large floor/table hybrid, the Medio was introduced to bring that same telescopic drama to standard desks, sideboards, and bedside tables without overwhelming the space. The most famous feature—the satin-finish stainless steel neck—is height-adjustable. You can "stretch" the lamp to change its proportions and the spread of light. The opal white methacrylate diffuser is divided into four sections, mimicking the membrane of a bat's wing. It creates a soft, diffused light that is perfect for ambiance. Designed at a time when women were rare in the top tiers of Italian architecture, Aulenti created a piece that broke all the rules of rigid 1960s modernism.
