Designed by Swedish artist and sculptor Folke Jansson, the Arabesk Double Sofa is a radical departure from the rigid functionalism of its era. First unveiled at the 1955 Gothenburg Furniture Fair, it was famously dubbed an "atomic bomb" for its avant-garde, asymmetrical form. It remains one of the few Swedish designs featured in the permanent collection of the Design Museum. Jansson designed the sofa as a single, continuous line that flows from the backrest into the arms and seat, creating a rhythmic, "moving" silhouette. Unlike traditional four-legged chairs, the Arabesk double sofa perches playfully on four legs, enhancing its sculptural, organic appearance. Because the sofa has no straight lines or right angles, the original prototypes were sculpted from papier-mâché and clay. Despite its artistic exterior, the deep, swooping curves are meticulously engineered to cradle the body. The Arabesk double sofa is more than a chair; it is a sculpture you can sit in. It broke the "square" mold of Scandinavian design, proving that furniture could be both ergonomic and wildly expressive. Today, it serves as a bold statement piece for interiors that value art as much as utility. "I wanted to create a sofa out of one single line." Folke Jansson
