The Vitra Eames Plastic Side Chair RE DSR, designed by Charles & Ray Eames in 1950, combines one of modern furniture design’s most recognizable molded seat shells with the elegant wire base commonly known as the Eiffel Tower base. The abbreviation DSR stands for Dining Height Side Chair Rod Base. Its organically shaped shell is paired with a non-stacking, four-legged steel wire base featuring cross struts. This combination gives the chair a light, architectural appearance while providing structural strength. The contemporary RE version features a shell manufactured from dyed-through, recycled polypropylene that is itself 100% recyclable. Due to the nature of the recycled material, subtle pigment specks may be visible in the shell and are a characteristic of the material rather than a defect. Multiple shell colors, upholstery options, and base finishes allow the DSR to adapt easily to residential dining rooms, kitchens, workspaces, hospitality settings, and other contemporary interiors. Vitra also offers versions with a seat cushion or full upholstery using recyclable polyurethane V-Foam.
