The Basket Armchair, designed by the legendary Kenneth Cobonpue, is a masterful blend of Scandinavian minimalism and traditional Filipino craftsmanship. Part of his broader Basket collection, this piece was designed to evoke the quiet, sturdy artistry of a hand-woven vessel while maintaining a modern, sophisticated profile. The Basket armchair is defined by its gently concave form, which is designed to "cradle" the sitter without the visual bulk of traditional upholstery. It utilizes a refined Panama pattern weave—a classic technique reimagined with a high-end luxury finish. The aesthetic is clean and rhythmic, focusing on the interplay between the light, porous backrest and the solid, grounded base. Cobonpue’s genius lies in his material selection, ensuring the chair feels both organic and high-tech: The backrest is hand-woven using refined polyethelene strips (for outdoor/durability) or rattan (for indoor warmth). The Panama weave provides incredible strength while allowing air to flow through the piece. A hidden steel or aluminum frame provides the structural "skeleton," ensuring the curves remain crisp over time. Unlike some of his more avant-garde metal-based works, the Basket Armchair typically rests on solid wooden legs, often finished in natural oak or walnut tones, which reinforces its "Scandinavian sensibility." It features a high-resilience foam seat cushion, usually upholstered in Sunbrella fabric or premium outdoor textiles that are water and UV resistant.

General Information
After spending years abroad, Kenneth Cobonpue returned to Cebu, Philippines, in 1996 to take over his mother Betty's furniture design and manufacturing company. Betty, who is a designer and a Pratt graduate, founded the company. Kenneth realized that modern design could be reinvented using natural fibers and materials. He began creating the pieces that now make up the collection by blending locally sourced organic materials with innovative handmade production techniques. This offered an alternative to the Western definition of modern design. He pays tribute to the talent of craftsmen, which forms the basis of the designs produced by KENNETHCOBONPUE today. The company produces high-end indoor and outdoor furniture and furnishings known for their artistic imprint and unique visual impact. All creations skillfully integrate nature, traditional craftsmanship, and innovative technologies.
